Corfu became one of the main centres of temporary settlement of the refugees of the Asia Minor, Pontos and East Thrace. Between 1922 and 1924 thousands of refugees arrived on the island. Most of them were later relocated to other areas, while those who stayed permanently were assimilated into the local society.
The exhibition is divided into six main thematic sections, which follow a linear sequence but can also stand independently. They present arrival, temporary and permanent settlement, social integration and professional rehabilitation, as well as the refugee memory today. Alongside these main themes, the exhibition is rounded off by four special tributes to people and events related to refugees and the Greek presence in Asia Minor.
The main objective of this digital exhibition, which is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, is the promotion and preservation of the historical memory and cultural heritage. Oral history and archival documents are used together to highlight both the historical events and their reception by the protagonists or their descendants, thus tracing the historical trauma to the present day.
